Historical Demographic Processes Dominate Genetic Variation in Ancient Atlantic Cod Mitogenomes

چکیده
Ancient DNA (aDNA) approaches have been successfully used to infer the long-term impacts of climate change, domestication, and human exploitation in a range terrestrial species. Nonetheless, studies investigating such using aDNA marine species are rare. Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ), is an economically important that has experienced dramatic census population declines during last century. Here, we investigated 48 ancient mitogenomes from historical specimens obtained archeological excavations northern Europe dated up 6,500 BCE. We compare these those 496 modern conspecifics sampled across North Ocean adjacent seas. Our results confirm earlier observations high levels mitogenomic variation lack mutation-drift equilibrium—suggestive expansion. Furthermore, our temporal comparison yields no evidence measurable changes through time. Instead, indicate reflects past demographic processes driven by major events (such as oscillations sea level) subsequent gene flow rather than contemporary fluctuations stock abundance. contemporaneous anthropogenic pressures commercial fisheries had little impact on diversity wide-spread with cod. These do not contradict overfishing negative consequences for abundance importance genetic implementing conservation strategies. imply any measures toward recovery eastern Atlantic, will be constrained recent loss variation.

Historical DNA reveals the demographic history of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in medieval and early modern Iceland.
Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) vertebrae from archaeological sites were used to study the history of the Icelandic Atlantic cod population in the time period of 1500-1990. Specifically, we used coalescence modelling to estimate population size and fluctuations from the sequence diversity at the cytochrome b (cytb) and Pantophysin I (PanI) loci. The models are consistent with an expanding populatio...
متن کاملVegetation variation across Cape Cod, Massachusetts: environmental and historical determinants
Aim We evaluate environmental and historical determinants of modern species composition for upland vegetation types across Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a region that supports numerous uncommon species assemblages that are conservation priorities. Location The study area encompasses the entire peninsula of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. Methods Historical changes in land-use and land-cover across the...
متن کاملAnalysis of Whole Mitogenomes from Ancient Samples.
Ancient mitochondrial DNA has been used in a wide variety of paleontological and archeological studies, ranging from population dynamics of extinct species to patterns of domestication. Most of these studies have traditionally been based on the analysis of short fragments from the mitochondrial control region, analyzed using PCR coupled with Sanger sequencing. With the introduction of high-thro...
متن کاملContemporary and historical oceanographic processes explain genetic connectivity in a Southwestern Atlantic coral
Understanding connectivity patterns has implications for evolutionary and ecological processes, as well as for proper conservation strategies. This study examined population genetic structure and migration patterns of the coral Mussismilia hispida, one of the main reef builders in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. For this, 15 sites were sampled along its entire distributional range employing 10...
متن کاملGenetic and morphological variation in Echinorhynchus gadi Zoega in Müller, 1776 (Acanthocephala: Echinorhynchidae) from Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L.
Previous studies have shown considerable variability in morphological features and the existence of genetically distinct sibling species in the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus gadi Zoega in Müller, 1776. The aim of the present study was to follow up and extend those earlier studies by using a combination of DNA analysis and morphometrics to investigate differences between samples of E. gadi from...
